Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)

The description of the companies that get the most value from your product and are cheapest for you to win and keep.

[01]What It Means

An ICP describes the account, not the person: industry, size, geography, technology in use, regulatory exposure, and the trigger that makes the problem urgent. A useful ICP is narrow enough to exclude most of the market and specific enough that two colleagues would build the same target list from it.

[02]Why It Matters

Every downstream number depends on it. Contact quality, answer rates, sales-cycle length, win rate, and CAC all move when the ICP moves. In a new market the ICP almost never transfers unchanged, because the same product often solves a different urgency for a German mid-cap than it does for a US scale-up.

[03]Where It Goes Wrong

Writing an ICP so broad that it excludes nobody, which pushes qualification cost into the sales team.Confusing the ICP with the buyer persona, then targeting job titles inside companies that will never buy.Never revisiting the ICP after the first ten deals, when the real pattern finally becomes visible.
