Serviceable Addressable Market (SAM)
The part of the total market your product, licences, and delivery model can actually serve today.
[01]What It Means
SAM applies real constraints to TAM: languages you support, regulatory approvals you hold, integrations you offer, deployment models you sell, and the segments your pricing fits. It is the market you could win with your current shape, before considering competition or capacity.
[02]Why It Matters
SAM is where expansion arguments get honest. A product without German-language support and a data-residency answer has a much smaller SAM in DACH than its TAM suggests, and that gap is a product roadmap decision, not a sales problem.
[03]Where It Goes Wrong
Ignoring compliance constraints, then discovering in procurement that half the SAM was never reachable.Counting segments your pricing structurally excludes.Confusing SAM with pipeline: it is capacity, not intent.
