GTM Glossary · Market Entry

Reference Customer

An existing client willing to vouch for you publicly or in a private call with a prospect.

[01]What It Means

References range from a logo on a page to a named case study to a peer conversation before signature. In Europe the private peer call often decides the deal, and it must be arranged with the client’s explicit consent.

[02]Why It Matters

In a market where you are unknown, a local reference removes more risk than any feature comparison. Building the first two references is usually the real objective of the first year.

[03]Where It Goes Wrong

Publishing client names or quotes without written approval.Relying on home-market references that carry no weight locally.Overusing a single reference until goodwill runs out.
