GTM Glossary · Metrics
Activation Rate
The share of signups or deployed seats that reach the defined first-value milestone.
[01]What It Means
Activation pairs with time to value: one measures how many arrive, the other how long they take. Self-serve products typically see 20% to 40%; enterprise deployments with dedicated onboarding should reach 60% to 80%.
[02]Why It Matters
Unactivated seats are the quiet form of churn – still paid for, never used, and gone at renewal. Tracking activation per market exposes localisation gaps that satisfaction surveys never surface.
[03]Where It Goes Wrong
Defining activation as login rather than value.Averaging across segments, hiding one cohort that never activates at all.Treating it as a product metric with no owner in the commercial team.
